Educaution Backgrounds

I recently finished up a 30 second animation project for a documentary film titled Educaution about the crippling student loan crisis. I directed the piece, storyboarded it, drew the background layouts, and animated a third of the project. I also cleaned up and colored all the animation. Bethany Craig animated the rest of the film and did an amazing job on flags and growing trees! Here are the backgrounds I drew for the project. My friend Eli Hoyt later painted the grassy layouts. Check out the project: https://www.facebook.com/Educaution101

Here's the section I animated.

Walk On

First attempt at a walk cycle in Maya. Maybe a little stiff still, but I'm pretty happy with it.

Maya Animation Basic Midterm

Fixed some problems in the animation before turning my work in. Specially, slowing down the pingpong ball, making all three balls hit the ground in unison, and fixing the roll on the first ball.

Bouncy ball with Ponytail

Secondary Action assignment. First is just practice for getting the ponytail to follow correctly.

Then we had to make the ball act a little before jumping off a diving board. Please ignore the fact that the diving board isn't reacting to the movements of the ball....

More Bouncing Balls

Now we are working on animating different types of bouncing balls. I just threw my three different balls in the same file so they aren't starting at the same height or falling at the same rate as they should be! I'll fix that later and change the sizes of the balls as well. From left to right they are a beach ball, a bowling ball and a pingpong ball.

Bounce Bounce

This semester we're learning how to animate in Maya. (Last semester was an introduction to modeling and things like constraints.) And of course we started with a bouncing ball.

First 3D After Effects

Had a lot of difficulties learning how to use the 3d aspects of After Effects. The camera is a little wonky and moves too much. The drawings are pastel sketches from the San Diego Japanese friendship garden. I couldn't figure out how to import a 3D photoshop element and get it to not randomly disappear! I didn't draw the "jumping fish." It was a temporary fish, but I had so many other problems I forgot to replace it.
Hopefully next time I try 3D in after effects, I will be much better. With better art as well.

Harpie Animation

Had to make a puppet and use alpha channel to make cycles for a dance.

Harpie

Puppets I made for my next animation project. She's probably not a good design for a stiff puppet. I really dislike the side view one. I didn't draw her well balanced and she's off balance in the front 3/4 view one too.

Some Recent Animations

First I made a sculpture out of recycleables and pasta

Then I took photos of 8 angles. Cut him out in photoshop and made each limb a separate layer, making sure to add missing parts. We used the puppet pin tool in After Effects to animate. First assignment was just to move it across the frame, second was to make it sentient.

Next is an attempt at visual music. I wasn't very inspired and had a hard time finding the beats.

This is my character animation last assignment, but we weren't told until the second pass that it was our final. first passes by hand, redrawn and frames added with photoshop animation.

I also helped my sister with some flash animation last semester. Animation by my sister Michelle. I edited her volumes and did the coloring.

Been working on animating the characters of the video game Quicksilver:Infinite Story, a USC Advance game project. I can't show any animation, but I think I can show the comic I did for their contest.

I learned how to use my tablet better. The script was from a pool of premade scripts, but I reworded it for comic conciseness.

Skeletons

My art midterm. I wish I could have put more time into the muscles...These are about 6 1/2 feet tall.

Weight Animation. Needed a few more frames at the end.

Besides, that midterms and working on a video game project are keeping me very busy. Though I took out a large chunk of my schedule to meet the Japanese animation students who visited my school. It was very interesting. Got to go to Sony Imageworks and Animation with them. I was so glad that the tour manager specially arranged Japanese speaking employees to talk to them about their work.

Freshman Fall Semester Animations

Here are the animations I did the Fall of my first year, (at least the ones I liked):
I realized I never put them up.

Hands and Feet

Assignment for art class. I like hands, but feet are kind of boring; not as interesting/flexible.

I redid some of the textures, added some new animation, credits, and got a composer. Now this animation is complete!

I never posted this one last year. There's like 50 masking layers on this. Crazy.

Self Portrait and Finished Animation Project; Disney Inspire Days

This is a self portrait I did for Art 101b. We had to draw ourselves in another artist's style. I chose Roy Lichtenstein. I don't really like it too much. Most of the stuff in this class is either really rushed or I don't like, but I do have a few figure drawings that I like and that I will post soon.

This last Friday I headed over to Disney Studios for Disney Inspire Days. I had heard about other animators in my class that were chosen by lottery to go so I emailed the people in charge and asked to be put on a waiting list. My school, I guess decided to send 10 other people to it and I got to go! : D
I had been sick all week but I REALLY REALLY wanted to go. My mom dropped me off at the gate and I wandered around a while until I found the right building. I was really early so I just looked at all the Mickey stuff. They gave us bagels and then we all went into a panel room. They gave a shout out to all the schools. Everyone was given a goodie bag of Princess and the Frog stickers, PatF journal, a mickey pin, and Principles of animation ruler and a Tangled advertisement. They welcomed us by showing us clips from Tangled. It looks so good! I really can't wait for it! There were panels focused on Good Story, Appealing characters, and a believable world, as well as Intern success stories.During these panels they had representatives from each department of story or character come up and talk about their job. They also had an storyboard thought demonstration and the animator of Dr. Facilier and Piglet talk about animation. He was hilarious! He talked about the original death scene of Ray and how he liked how he animated it, but it was deemed to violent. I didn't see the Believable World panel because I went on the Studio tour at that time. There was visual development of Tangled all over the place. I love Flynn Rider's design! He's personality is so apparent through it! Also I really like how the rigs (3-D animation bones) are being put to the test. There was a scene of him getting hit and it flowed like 2-D animation.
I found out so much about the studio. They are trying to make it much more open so that accidental conversations that lead to inspiration occur and there is even a gym and a game room. I wanted to work for Disney before, but now I really REALLY want to. I need to work very hard to become a better artist! >: D

This is my completed animation assignment for class. We were supposed to do a pixelation combined with hand drawn animation assignment, but it turned into an After Effects project! Now i can start the next assignment which is silhouette stop motion.
